Although the weather outside was cold and frightful, things were hot inside the Silver City Elks Lodge on Saturday evening when the club celebrated paying off their mortgage by burning it.

Members of the board of trustees took turns burning a page of the mortgage after a short speech reminiscing about the last 10 years spent in the lodge on South Cooper Street next to Highway 90.

Now that the mortgage is paid, Silver City Elks Lodge No. 413 will be able to focus more on what’s important to the lodge, which is giving back to the community in which it resides.

According to Exalted Ruler Andrew Housley, the lodge has given more than $81,000 to the community in charitable donations since 2015.

“We’re proud that it’s paid off because it will allow us to focus more on charity and those in need,” Housley said.

The Elks Lodge moved from their location downtown more than 10 years ago to their current location next to the High Desert Humane Society, and since then they have worked to pay off the nearly $200,000 mortgage.

Housley, who became Exalted Ruler in 2015, made it his goal to pay off the mortgage. Housley is resigning this year from his position as Exalted Ruler after two years presiding over the lodge, and is proud that he has been able to accomplish his goal. When he first took the helm of the lodge the mortgage was just under $100,000.

Paying off the mortgage of any lodge within the Elks organization is a big deal since the goal of the club is to give back to the community. The Elks donate to organizations like local high school sports teams, nonprofits, churches and a variety of others.

Housley said although they celebrated the paying off of the mortgage on Saturday, the lodge actually signed the paperwork paying off the mortgage back in October 2016.

Saturday’s celebration, although a couple of months late, also celebrated the lodge’s 119 years in Silver City after it was founded in 1898. Due to the dual celebration, many Elks dignitaries turned out for the event, including the state president and representatives of the Grand Elks Lodge.

Rick Callaway, Special Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler of Roswell Lodge No. 969, on behalf of Grand Exalted Ruler John D. Amen, said that he was proud the Silver City Lodge was able to pay off their mortgage.

“I was excited we got this news. What this lodge and the leadership of this lodge has done is amazing,” Callaway said.

He said although much of his job generally deals with lodges in trouble, being part of something positive felt nice for a change.

“I was so proud to get to be a part of something good,” Callaway said.

Larry Curtis, the New Mexico Elks Association president, said he was also happy to be able to attend a mortgage burning ceremony at one of the state lodges.

“I congratulate you for fostering great leaders,” Curtis said. “When leadership extends past the lodge, it means a lot to us in the association and the people in New Mexico.”

Lordsburg Elks to Host Youth Turkey Shoot

Officer Training to Start

The beginning of the 2017 Lodge year is upon us, and that means each Lodge will soon be visited by your friendly Officer Training facilitators. This year we have some new folks heading your way:

Denise Dawson, from Raton 969 for the Southwest, Jerry Wheeler, from Las Cruces 1119 for the Southeast, Mary Rogers from Farmington 1747 for the Northwest, and, well, making a return (and hopefully final) appearance, Dan Gerth, from Los Alamos 2083 for the Northeast.

Sessions will be starting the last weekend in February, and run through the end of April. Each Lodge will receive a letter from your facilitator asking you to set a date for your training, and don’t dilly-dally, as there really isn’t a lot of room! Note that you do not need to wait for your Officers to be installed to set a date, you should be pretty sure right now who will be coming in.

As usual, we’ve added some new information to the presentation, so it will be fresh, and well worth your while. All officers (including appointed officers) are expected to attend, and all members are very welcome. Come and Learn what the Statutes actually say!

Dan

It’s That Time!

Well folks, hard to believe that February is here, and that means…New Officers (and committee chairs)! 1st meeting, nominations, 2nd meeting, elections. And, all you Lodge Secretaries get to enter all that information into CLMS. The state directory is also starting up, and we use the CLMS information to build the database, so we are counting on y’all to get the information in quickly, and please, double check for accuracy.

I really want to put the directory out to everyone by the end of May, so I’m counting on you to get your CLMS updates in as soon as possible.

Thanks,

Dan

Pictures Needed!

We would like to have a picture of your Lodge on the information popup that appears when you click on a flag on the Lodges map. That way visitors have an idea what to look for when they are trying to find you.

It doesn’t have to be an Ansel Adams masterpiece, just step outside and use your phone camera. Please email them to dgerth1116@gmail.com and I’ll get them on the site.

So far we have Albuquerque, Los Alamos and Roswell. Don’t be left out!

Thanks!

Dan

Silver City 413 Celebrates 119 Years!

Back in 1898:

The U.S.S. Maine explodes and sinks in Havana Harbor on Feb. 15, 1898, killing 266 American sailors. The U.S. Congress declares war on Spain. In the first battle between Spanish and American Forces, U.S. Commodore Dewey and his Asiatic squadron defeat the Spanish fleet at Manila Bay in the Philippines. U.S. troops land in Cuba. U.S. forces defeat the Spanish at the Battle of San Juan Heights. The 1st amusement pier opens in Atlantic City, NJ. Automobile speed record set (39 mph)

And in Silver City NM the Elks Lodge 413 was born!

On Saturday February 25th we will be celebrating our 119th Birthday and holding a Mortgage burning Celebration. We are planning a meal and Sue Barr will provide entertainment. We have also invited dignitaries to join in the festivities. Mark your calendar now. Tickets are on sale at the lodge and must be purchased ahead of time. $10 will be charged and for that you will get one catered meal, one bar drink, and entertainment. Plan to enjoy the evening and celebrate 119 years of Elks and being Mortgage free! Come celebrate with us as we paid $100,000 off in debt in 18months almost 10 years early!
